Enroll in a Business of Science: Hardtech Commercialization Seminar Series, a TGS professional development seminar series dedicated to postdocs in the Chicagoland area during Winter 2024. This series is sponsored by The Graduate School, Northwestern University's Querrey InQbation Lab, and the Chicago Biomedical Consortium. Please note: The deadline to apply has now been extended to Thursday, November 30.

This ten-week seminar series is designed to introduce management concepts and methods for research scientists in the postdoctoral community interested in entrepreneurship and commercialization of university technologies. This series aims to help postdocs develop critical and analytical thinking abilities in the context of commercializing university technologies and provide an overall vision of how the various functional areas of management support aid the effort to bring technologies to market.

Lectures, in-class discussions, case studies, guest speakers, and online learning assessments are among the methods that will be used to help critically evaluate innovations and the best ways to think about and act upon commercialization opportunities.

Participants of the seminar series will build critical and analytical thinking skills while engaging in class discussions based on business cases, where the choice to innovate is a key question. Cases may offer conflicting information. They will require you to make judgment calls. This kind of ambiguity is a feature of business decisions in practice, and strategy is a field that asks a big question that draws on many other functional business areas.

Topics of interest will include:

  • Business – strategy and healthcare market idiosyncrasies
  • Law – board governance and intellectual property management
  • Finance – startup accounting, working with investors, financing, intangible assets, and debt-equity trade-offs
