Postdoctoral Fellowship Opportunity - Genomic Data
The lab of Dr. Andrea Gschwend in the Department of Horticulture and Crop Science at The Ohio State University seeks a full-time, highly motivated postdoctoral researcher, specializing in genomic data. The Gschwend lab uses a comparative genomics approach to identify genes that contribute to agronomically significant phenotypes in crop species. They utilize experimental, computational, and functional methods to address genomic and evolutionary questions related to crop improvement.
The successful candidate will develop and implement bioinformatics pipelines to carry out comparative genomic analyses, evaluate genomic sequence and annotation quality, analyze and interpret data output, and organize and articulate results in both written and figure form for peer-reviewed manuscripts and grants. They will contribute to laboratory and greenhouse experiments when appropriate. Other responsibilities include mentoring graduate and undergraduate students, data management, minor lab administrative duties, and providing bioinformatics support for the lab.
- PhD in genomics, bioinformatics, molecular genetics, or a related field
- Proficiency in programing languages (e.g., Python, Java, Perl, etc.) and statistical programming software (e.g., R, SAS, MATLAB etc.); experience working with and analyzing large genomic data sets, such as whole genome DNA sequencing and RNAseq data, and competency in statistical genomics
- Excellent work ethic, initiative, time management, and self-motivation, with the ability to work independently and in collaboration with others
- Ability to clearly communicate methods and results to colleagues with varying expertise to achieve common research goals
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Prior experience and success with genome sequencing, genome assembly, syntenic alignments, gene annotation, and comparative genomic analyses
- Wet lab experience with technologies commonly used in molecular genetics labs, such as PCR, gel electrophoresis, cloning, etc.
- Understanding of genetics and evolution methodology and theory
Compensation: $48,000 - $50,000
