Division of Stroke and Neurocritical Care Grant Opportunity

The Davee Foundation Stroke Research Seed Grant is intended to support young, talented investigators in early career development as researchers who are interested in advancing understanding in stroke and vascular brain injury.

Eligibility

The Grant is available to Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine Principle Investigators who hold a faculty appointment or are a postdoctoral fellow. Applicants must have a Northwestern University appointment that lasts the duration of the grant project period.

Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago and Shirley Ryan AbilityLab faculty will be eligible to apply, provided they have appointments within the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.

FOR POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWS ONLY: You must also include with your application a letter from your Mentor supporting the application and confirming the time and resource commitment. If you are on a visa, proof that your visa extends through the duration of the project period will be required. You cannot hold a National Service Research Award (NRSA) or NIH training grant appointment and The Davee Foundation Stroke Research Seed Grant simultaneously.

Students and residents are not eligible to be the principal investigators on proposal, but may be part of the research team.

Project Description and Criteria:

The proposed research must be relevant to the clinical care of patients with stroke or other vascular brain injury. Results from the proposed study should promise to advance understanding of fundamental processes, novel therapeutic and diagnostic strategies to improve brain injury outcomes; to suggest improved strategies for healthcare delivery; or to reduce healthcare disparities. Some important areas of focus are imaging and diagnostics; recovery and rehabilitation; prevention and novel medication; hemorrhagic stroke and neurocritical care outcomes; and community health and public policy.

Results should be expected to lead to larger extramural grants from the National Institutes of Health or from other funding agencies or foundations.

Budget Restrictions:

  • Indirect costs will not be funded under the Grant.
  • Travel will not be funded unless it is a vital component to the project’s success. Total travel expenditures are limited to $1,500 per trip per person.
  • Investigator salary support will not be funded.
  • Salary support for essential positions including but not limited to research assistants, technicians, and analysts will be accepted in budget requests.

Funding Amount and Duration:

The Davee Foundation Stroke Research Seed Grant will be limited to one year of support, beginning July 1, 2018 and ending June 30, 2019. Maximum award will be $25,000. Research projects that make exceptional progress after the first year of funding may apply again for a second year of funding.

Application Deadline:

Applications are due April 30, 2018. Applicants will be notified of award decision June 2018. Awarded research project may not commence until IRB approval is obtained.
