Postdoctoral Research Opportunity – Global Cancer Care, Health Services

The Department of Surgery, Division of Surgical Oncology, and Program in Global Surgery is seeking an outstanding postdoctoral scholar to work on health services research in global cancer care.

This position offers an opportunity to work with Dr. Juliet Lumati, a global oncologist and recent ASCO Young Investigator Awardee and Former Fogarty Fulbright Fellow for her extensive work and history in health care financing for surgical and cancer care in Sub-Saharan Africa over the last 10 years. Dr Lumati’s lab has strong emphasis on health services research, health economics research in global cancer care. Ongoing work includes a randomized control trial evaluating the effectiveness of a financial navigation program on financial catastrophe and distress for cancer patient translateble to the United States. She is a member of Big Ten Cancer Consortium, International Committee of the Society of Surgical Oncology. The executive council of the Association of Academic Surgeons, The G4 Alliance, amongst others. 

The postdoctoral scholar would be expected to build a publication record, including submissions to leading global health journals, apply for internal and external funding with support from Dr. Lumati and attend national meetings that will help build an international reputation. It is expected the scholar would develop skill sets which will enable them to become an independent funded investigator upon completion of their training or in the future. The applicant will also be strongly supported and encouraged to apply for the HBNU Consortium Fogarty Fellowship and MSKCC Global Cancer Disparities Fellowship.

Minimum Qualifications 

MD or PhD in training in science related fields, strong emphasis in exposure to quantitative and qualitive research. Interest and or experience in cancer research is preferred.

Required Competencies 

  • Some experience in clinical trial design, statistically analysis using R program, economic analysis and cost-effective analysis
  • Experience in health services research 
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to design and conduct qualitative studies in cancer research
  • Ability to prepare and present at research meetings and write scientific manuscripts 
  • Strong organization skills 
  • Ability to contribute to the mentoring of trainees and fostering a collaborative, respectful and welcoming environment

This is a primarily remote based opportunity with opportunity for in person experiences as required by the research projects. This may also include travel opportunities to scientific conferences and meetings. The scholar would be expected to work within a rich research environment which includes project managers, data analysts, clinical trials coordinators and be able work with our collaborating institutions which include Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Lakeshore Cancer Center, Roswell Park Cancer Center, Obafemi Awolowo University, and Lagos University Teaching Hospital.
