Postdoctoral Research Opportunity – Improving LIPIT Platform in the Schuh Group

The McCormick School of Engineering is currently seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher with a strong background in optics to join the Schuh Group at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering of Northwestern University (Evanston, IL). This role offers an exciting opportunity to apply expertise in laser systems to improve a cutting-edge testing technique central to our research, enabling the study of materials mechanics at extreme rates of deformation.

Our research involves the Laser-Induced Particle Impact Test (LIPIT), in which individual particles are launched with an in-house-designed microscale test platform. The particle approach and impact on the target are observed in real time using a high-speed camera and a synchronized laser imaging pulse for illumination. The successful candidate will play a key role in improving and optimizing the LIPIT platform in our lab.

Essential Qualifications:

  • A PhD in materials science, physics, optics, or a related field.
  • Expertise in optical systems, laser-based diagnostics, and/or high-speed imaging is highly desired.
  • Experience with experimental mechanics and materials characterization is advantageous.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, creativity in experimental design, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

Interested candidates submit the following documents as a single PDF file:

  1. Cover Letter: Addressing your research experience, interests, and why you are interested in this position.
  2. Curriculum Vitae (CV).
  3. References: Contact information for [e.g., 3] referees who can provide letters of recommendation upon request.

Applications should be submitted electronically to srikanth.patala@northwestern.edu.
