Postdoctoral Training Opportunity – Computational Nanodynamics Laboratory

The Computational Nanodynamics Laboratory is looking for a postdoctoral associate to join our vibrant research group led by Prof. Sinan Keten at Northwestern University, Evanston, IL. The Keten Research Group aims to establish computational tools to understand the mechanical behavior of polymeric and biomolecular materials. We are part of a broad network of collaborations involving the NIST Center for Hierarchical Materials Design (CHiMaD), Northwestern NSF Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (NU-MRSEC), Center for Synthetic Biology at Northwestern, Center for the Manufacturing of Synthetic Biological Materials (CMSBM) at Washington University in St. Louis, and several research groups. Computational resources include access to our in-house CPU/GPU cluster, national high-performance computing centers, and Northwestern’s Quest High-Performance Computing Cluster.

The postdoctoral associate will have the opportunity to work on a broad range of computational materials modeling and mechanics projects related to the mechanical behavior of polymer grafted nanoparticle assemblies, rheological behavior of colloidal and cementitious materials for large-scale additive manufacturing, sequence mechanical property relationships in microbially fabricated protein-based fibers and gels, and high-strain rate behavior of nanostructured composites. Current projects are sponsored by the National Science Foundation and the US Army Research Office.  The candidate will have the opportunity to work with an interdisciplinary team of researchers consisting of graduate and undergraduate researchers. Opportunities will be provided to obtain training in teaching, grant writing, and research mentorship. The appointment is for one year, with the possibility of renewal and/or promotion to a research associate position based on performance in the subsequent years.

Applicants are expected to have demonstrated excellence in research and scholarly writing with a strong track record of publications. A PhD in a related field is required for this position. Expertise in atomistic and molecular modeling techniques (molecular dynamics, coarse-grained molecular simulations, etc.), continuum mechanics, machine learning, or other methods used for the mechanical characterization of materials is highly desired. Additionally, a strong background in soft matter research (polymer science, biophysics, or related areas) is preferable.

Interested candidates should send their CV, including a brief description of their research interests, a list of publications, and contact information of three references as a single pdf file to Prof. Sinan Keten (s-keten@northwestern.edu), with the subject line “Postdoctoral Application”. Applications will be considered on a rolling basis until the position is filled. The start date is negotiable. Feel free to email Prof. Sinan Keten with any questions.
