Postdoctoral Training Opportunity – RNA Sequencing with the Mazzulli Lab (Department of Neurology)

The Mazzulli Lab is a neuroscience lab focused on elucidating the mechanisms of neurodegeneration. Our emphasis is on understanding how amyloid aggregates form in the brain, and their downstream toxic functions such as disrupting proteostasis and gene regulation.
Description:
A postdoctoral research is needed for a neuroscience lab at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, Dept of Neurology. The applicant will be exposed to and learn a variety of techniques ranging from biochemistry, cell biology, and molecular biology, for the characterization of patient derived neurons generated from induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) and mouse models. Our research is concentrated on mechanisms that govern a-synuclein aggregation, and how the amyloid forming process results in neurodegeneration in Parkinson’s disease (PD) and other age-related neurodegenerative disorders.
The successful applicant will be expected to lead a portion of a 5 yr, NIH funded research project related to the laboratory’s general field of interest of in how protein aggregates influence gene regulation with an emphasis on RNA stability, editing, and splicing. We seek applicants with extensive experience in obtaining and analyzing large RNA-seq data sets, single-cell RNA-seq from cultures or human brain, and identifying alterations in RNA splicing, structure, and function. Trainees will develop skills for the study of these pathways at the bench, grant writing, management, and other skills required to eventually gain independence in academia or industry. Ongoing collaborations with the neurology clinic allow for target advancement and translational studies.

Requirements:
Ph.D. degree in cell biology, molecular biology, neuroscience, or biochemistry. Prior cell culture work or experience with culturing human stem cells is required. We cannot respond to applicants with irrelevant experience. The applicant must have a demonstrated track record of interest and productivity in neuroscience, neurodegeneration, and / or protein aggregation through previous publications and experience. applicants with expertise in molecular biology including transcription regulation, RNA processing and nuclear export are encouraged to apply.
