Postdoctoral Training Opportunity – Sinan Keten Lab, Computational Nanodynamics Laboratory

A postdoctoral trainee position is available immediately at the Computational Nanodynamics Laboratory at Northwestern University with Professor Sinan Keten.

This research project focuses broadly on examining impact physics and high-strain rate mechanical properties of polymeric and nanostructured materials using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and multi-scale methods such as systematic coarse-graining techniques. The postdoctoral trainee will lead multiple projects focusing on how molecular topology of polymers, nanomaterials (e.g. graphene oxide, polymer grafted nanoparticles etc.), and nanocomposites influence the rate-dependent mechanical response. The work is highly interdisciplinary and involves collaborations with data science, synthesis, and characterization experts at Northwestern University and other institutions, including national labs. The candidate will lead a team of researchers consisting of graduate and undergraduate researchers and will have opportunities to get involved in grant writing and research mentorship.

Desired Skills

Applicants are expected to have demonstrated excellence in research and scholarly writing with a strong track record of publications. The appointment is for one year, with the possibility of renewal and/or promotion to a research associate position based on performance in the subsequent years.

Requirements

  • A Ph.D. in a related field is required for this position.
  • Expertise in atomistic and molecular modeling techniques (molecular dynamics, coarse-grained molecular simulations, etc.), or continuum mechanics, or other methods used for the mechanical characterization of materials is highly desired.
  • Additionally, a strong background in soft matter research (polymer science, biophysics, or related areas) is preferable.

Interested candidates should send their CV, including a brief description of their research interests, a list of publications, and contact information of three references as a single pdf file to Prof. Sinan Keten (s-keten@northwestern.edu), with the subject line “Postdoctoral Application”. Evaluations will begin immediately until the position is filled. The start date is flexible but tentatively anticipated to be in the summer of 2021.

Please feel free to contact Professor Sinan Keten (s-keten@northwestern.edu) for further inquiry.
